The work of the Centre for Conflict Resolution's (CCR) Prisons Transformation Project is the focus of a documentary Cage of Dreams (screened as Killers Don't Cry in the UK), made for BBC CORRESPONDENT, England's top documentary series. For a hundred years, South Africa's prisons have held a dark, impenetrable secret - a tightly organised criminal network called "Die Nommer" (The Number). Local prison authorities want to end the cycle of crime and violence the Numbers generate within the prison system. The only way of achieving this is to change the criminal mindset -- a difficult and dangerous challenge. In Cage of Dreams, men of the Numbers gangs break their code of silence and reveal a fraternity that is almost mystical in the lifelong devotion it demands from its members. This documentary also bears witness to a brave, innovative endeavour by South Africa's prison authorities and the Centre for Conflict Resolution to inculcate a code of humanity and peace among members of the Numbers gangs in Pollsmoor Prison.
