Who can use the library?
The library is open to CCR staff, interns and associates, visiting
researchers working at the CCR, University of Cape Town students and faculty,
users from other universities, and the general public. In fact, although a
reference library, it is open to any visitor to the Centre.
Seating is
limited. Please phone the library at (021) 422-2512 or email Noxolo
Mniki before coming to the library so that we can make
arrangements for your visit.
What are the main collections in the library?
- The General Collection contains books, manuals and reports on many
aspects of conflict management, peacekeeping, peace building, mediation and
negotiation. Electronic journals, web sites and online articles are constantly
being added to the online catalogue.
- The Youth Collection concentrates on material to do with
youth-related issues. Outreach Bags of selected titles, particularly for use
by educators, are available for short loan. For more information on the CCR’s
Outreach Programme, please contact our Outreach Officer Selma Walters
- The Video Collection consists of teaching material, particularly to
do with conflict management and peer mediation for youth. We also have more
general videos, many on Africa.
- The Journal Collection comprises selected academic journals in the
field. A large number of newsletters and magazines are exchanged with
organisations similar to ourselves.
- The Pamphlet Collection includes many items written from the
1960s-1990s on conflict resolution topics, as well as mediation and
negotiation during the transition to democracy in South Africa. Most of this
is useful ‘grey literature’ i.e.: not commercially published.
- The Staff Research Collection covers research papers and other
outputs by Centre for Intergroup Studies and CCR staff.
Can I access the catalogue over the Internet?
Yes. It is hosted by The University of Cape Town Libraries. Connect here
Can I take out material?
Only copies of videos may be borrowed, at a fee of R10 per video. As this is
a research library, nothing else my be borrowed – this should ensure that
material is always available at any time.
Can I photocopy material?
Certainly, depending on copyright regulations and provided the material is in
good condition. Charges are 26c/A4 page for registered UCT students, cash (we do
not have a UCT card machine) and 30c/A4 page for other users.
Can I use the printers?
Yes. The charge is the same as for photocopying.
Can I use my laptop in the library?
Yes, we do have powerpoints.
What services do the librarians provide?
- Assistance with reference inquiries by visitors to the Peace Library, as
well as by phone, fax and email. We do do this firstly by ...
- Introduction to the library collections through the Peace Library online
catalogue. We can assist users with information retrieval both within the
library and more widely, particularly through ...
- Internet links to UCT Libraries. Through them we have access to numerous
local and overseas databases, including full-text electronic journals. These links are
often limited by licensing to University of Cape Town students, staff, and
faculty using a computer connected to the university's network. If you are not
among these groups or if you are using another access method [e.g.: IAfrica],
some of these resources may not be accessible. Apart
from the UCT connection ...
- We are closely linked to a number of university, research, NGO and other
libraries, such as the National Library of South Africa. We will re-direct
users if necessary.
